About The Wake Up Foundation

The Wake Up Foundation and the Wake Up Europe! campaign were launched in 2013 by lifelong international journalists Annalisa Piras and Bill Emmott in response to the overwhelming reaction of civil society and ordinary citizens across Europe to the pair’s first documentary ‘Girlfriend in a Coma’ (2013).

Since then, the Wake Up Europe! campaign has used the power of films to engage citizens from all over Europe in a conversation about the change we want to see in Europe. At over 150 screenings of ‘The Great European Disaster Movie’, Piras’s 2015 documentary, and debates, we have met to discuss together the future of our continent.
Our mission is to use the screening of films as a collective moment to inspire people to think, talk and act to protect and nurture together the core European values of democracy, peace and prosperity.

Our latest campaign brings award-winning filmmaker Annalisa Piras’s latest documentary ‘Europe At Sea’ to screenings and lively debates across Europe, asking audiences to engage on Europe’s response to migration crises, humanitarian disasters, global insecurity, and the rise of new wars. We ask audiences, can Europeans do more to protect themselves? Moreover, the

Wake Up Foundation is planning a 2019 Impact Film Festival in Turin, leveraging its reputation as a film-based campaign organisation to showcase and promote other European filmmakers with impactful films to share.
